Amphibian eDNA Pilot Report

Description: In the spring of 2020, ABMI initiated a pilot project to explore the effectiveness of environmental DNA (eDNA) technology for monitoring amphibians in open water wetland habitats. This report describes the results of this project. Autonomous recording units (ARU) and eDNA amphibian detections were compared at four open water wetlands near Edmonton, Alberta in the summer of 2020. The methods were generally in agreement on amphibian detections but there were examples where each method detected species where the other did not. The results suggested that there are opportunities to augment ARU monitoring with eDNA for specific species.
