Our Centres
Our operations are organized into eight different units.
Each unit is housed in one or more of the facilities of our delivery partners: the University of Alberta, InnoTech Alberta, and the University of Calgary. Each of our seven centres is overseen by a director, who in turn sits on our management team with members of the Executive Office.
Collaboration is at the heart of our operations, and staff work together across centres on everything from scientific protocol development to field monitoring to stakeholder engagement.
This distributed delivery model allows the ABMI to capitalize on the inherent strengths offered by each of these partners, which, in turn, ensures the optimal delivery of our products and services.

Executive Office
Accountable to the ABMI Board and Membership, the Executive Office works to plan and carry out strategic objectives and ensure the ABMI's relevance and responsiveness to Albertans.

- Leads field data collection, ground-truthing, quality control, and initial species identification
- Tests protocols and provides training of staff, partners, and collaborators
- Negotiates land access and maintains landholder relationships

Our team of developers, database managers, and reporting specialists:
- Develop platforms for managing, processing, and sharing data (e.g., WildTrax, the Mapping Portal, interactive online reports)
- Respond to information requests and client needs
- Manage the ABMI's data and lead our quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) process

Imaging Centre
Our team of GIS analysts, technologists, computer scientists, developers, and scientists work to:
- Improve natural resource management activities in Canada through the creation of consistent and unique scientific capacity that is foundational to practical, real-world issues.
- Facilitate the creation of high-resolution geospatial data that will be applied to environmental challenges including restoration, reclamation, climate change, species-at-risk management, land use mapping, and provincial/territorial planning.
- Utilize artificial intelligence to reach the above goals.
Imaging Centre
Generating high-quality, high-resolution geospatial data products such as airborne lidar and optical imagery.

- Creates and maintains comprehensive human footprint and land cover layers across Alberta
- Develops and leverages cutting-edge remote sensing methods to detect changes in land cover
- Supports land access and cross-centre geospatial analysis
- Maps and monitors terrestrial and hydrological habitats
