Sound attenuation in forest and roadside environments: Implications for avian point-count surveys

Published: Jan 31, 2017
Description: This study examined the transmission of sound in forest habitats and along forestry roads to calculate the detection radius for various bird species. In forested environements, this research showed that sound attenuated faster and the distance for bird song detection was signifcantly shorter relative to forest edges or along roads. This study outlines considerations when comparing bird abundance values determined from point count surveys across environmental conditions.
