We Do Communications

Spreading the word.

“The ABMI can be a voice for tracking the change in wildlife and biodiversity across the province and report in a trusted manner to the people who are making the decisions, including the people in the province of Alberta.” – Jim Herbers, Executive Director

The ABMI provides value-neutral, scientific and freely available information for all Albertans.

The ABMI is passionate about delivering the best quality biodiversity reports and information about Alberta’s wildlife and habitats. This information is critical for understanding how our province and biodiversity is changing. To this end, we strive to ensure that our information and data is accessible and relevant to the challenges that managers and decision-makers in this province face on both macro and micro scales. Our information is used by a wide variety of people who care about the future of our landbase ranging from industry, government, environmental groups, researchers and the general public.

Education and bioliteracy are a driving force behind many of our activities. Our goal is to create and support a more informed public so that we can engage in meaningful dialogue.

The ABMI's Information and Operations Centres facilitate our activities in science communication, outreach, and data management.

Communications & Outreach

The ABMI works closely with a wide range of stakeholders and Indigenous communities to consistently understand their changing needs. Our stakeholders include industry, resource managers, government, landowners, scientific researchers, the media, and Alberta's public; we actively engage and collaborate with First Nations and Métis communities.

We put great value on face-to-face communications and connecting with Albertans whether it is at the Cattle trail at the Calgary Stampede, through targeted workshops, or in media interviews.

We regularly connect with the community through our:

The ABMI Report Series: The Status of Biodiversity in Alberta

The ABMI regularly develops and releases reports on the status or health of biodiversity in different regions across the province. Reports can be on specific areas such as the Oil Sands Region, land use planning regions, or natural regions; on particular groups of species; and on human footprint across the province.

Reports are developed through consultation with the environmental community, industry, and government. Our goal is to maintain value neutral and relevant reporting that will serve the community. Reports are centered on the ABMI’s Intactness Index and include a combination of base statistics, data analysis and summaries.

Data Management

The ABMI produces species level data that represents biodiversity in Alberta from border to border. We also produce detailed human footprint information. ABMI data is freely available to anyone who wants to access it. ABMI data has multiple uses for our stakeholders - whether it’s helping to answer questions from the research community, the management community or the general public, and can benefit everybody in this province and beyond.

The ABMI implements rigorous quality control and sound data management to ensure data integrity. The ABMI develops custom software and uses field computers to facilitate the smooth and efficient transfer of data from the field directly into our databases.

The ABMI receives data from field surveys, taxonomic data, human footprint and habitat information.

Our Data

  • Field surveys include data on trees, plants, mammals, birds and water chemistry.
  • Taxonomic data includes information on aquatic invertebrates, bryophytes, lichen, and mites.
  • Provincial human footprint and habitat data come primarily from GIS layers and remotely sensed imagery.
