New to Alberta - Arctic Haircap Moss!

POSTED ON:

New to Alberta! Arctic Haircap Moss, or Polytrichum hyperboreum has now been detected in Alberta.

Arctic Haircap Moss is abundant in Arctic North America, but has creeped its way down into the Canadian shield region of Alberta near Fort Chipewyan. It stands out from other Haircap Mosses with its bi-colored hair point (awn; half brown half white), and the stacks of cells on its leaves that are topped with an evenly thickened cell!

Thanks to the bryophyte team (Brittney Miller and Teri Hill) from the Royal Alberta Museum for their hard work. Photo: Brittney Miller
