The ABMI’s GIS human footprint and land cover data are vital to understanding relationships between human land use, habitat and species abundance. These data are used to support policy development, regional planning, and cumulative effects management decisions.
Wall-to-Wall Human Footprint Inventory
The ABMI Wall-to-Wall Human Footprint Inventory (scale 1:15,000) is a detailed and thorough representation of provincial scale anthropogenic footprint (e.g. agriculture, forestry, energy) information for the province of Alberta.
Wall-to-wall Land Cover Inventory
The ABMI Wall-to-Wall Land Cover Inventory is a polygon-based representation of the types and extent of broad land cover classes (e.g. water, grassland, and mixed forest) in Alberta.
3 x 7-km Photoplot Land Cover Data
The ABMI 3 x 7 Photoplot Land Cover Data Set is a very detailed and comprehensive GIS data layer that provides information on a number of land surface attributes.
3 x 7-km Sample-based Human Footprint Data
Annually updated sample-based human footprint layer (scale: 1:5,000) based on the ABMI’s systematic grid of 1,656 3 x 7-km plots that cover approximately 5% of the province.
Enabled through machine learning, Predictive Landcover is a geospatial sensor system built using a fusion of optical, Radar, LiDAR DEM, and other DEMs.
Boreal Fen Probability
The Boreal Fen probability data set is a raster-based product that describes the probability of fen habitat at a 10 m resolution across the entire Alberta Boreal Forest Natural Region.
Boreal Peatland Probability
The Boreal Peatland probability data set is a raster based product which describes the probability of peatland habitat at a 10 m resolution across Alberta's Boreal Forest Natural Region.
Boreal Surface Water Inventory
The Boreal Surface Water Inventory is a data set which gives the location, extent, and attributes of 421,348 waterbodies across the Alberta Boreal Forest Natural Region.

The Boreal Wetland probability data set is a raster based product which describes the probability of wetland habitat at a 10 m resolution across Alberta's Boreal Forest Natural Region.
Detailed Vegetation Maps
The ABMI Detailed Wall-to-Wall Land Cover Map is a comprehensive representation of upland and lowland vegetation types and the extent of their coverage in Alberta.
Hydro Temporal Variability
This dataset represents a summary of variability in surface water extent during ice-free months (April-October) from 2014-2017. The layer values demonstrate the percent of time a given 10 m pixel was identified as water in Alberta.
Native Vegetation Edge
This product displays the amount and location of native vegetation (i.e. areas not visibly disturbed by humans) at different distances (buffers) from human footprint.
Native Vegetation Mesh Size
Effective mesh size—a measure of fragmentation—displays the amount and configuration of native vegetation in Alberta, identifying larger, more connected habitat patches compared to smaller, more fragmented patches.
