GIS Technician

Location : University of Alberta, Edmonton

The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) is currently seeking highly motivated, results-oriented, self-starting individuals to assist in updating Human Footprint across Alberta using recent remotely sensed data. It is a great opportunity for junior to intermediate employees. This position may extend past the end date. The successful candidate will use satellite images of Alberta and GIS software to edit/update existing data layers.

ABMI is an arms-length, value-neutral scientific organization that measures and reports on the health of Alberta’s biodiversity. The ABMI is among the most rigorous and broadly-supported biodiversity monitoring programs in the world.

  • Interpret and map human footprint from satellite imagery and GIS data;
  • Edit existing layers;
  • Maintain and manage spatial data.


  • Experience using ArcGIS;
  • Familiarity with Alberta's landscape;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Able to work independently;
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
